Gigan (ガイガン, Gaigan) is an alien cyborg kaiju that first appeared in Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah. Arriving on Earth thousands of years ago with King Ghidorah, Gigan retreated following a near defeat at the hands of the three guardians: Mothra, Baragon, and King Caesar. Although he returned, he was defeated and imprisoned by Mothra.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Gigan awoke after thousands of years later in the 21st century to bring destruction to the world and serve King Ghidorah once more. However, Gigan was defeated by Earth's guardian monsters.
Gigan's Japanese name, Gaigan, was derived from "nice guy" (ナイスガイ naisu gai) combined with the word for goose, gan (雁); both were influences on Gigan's design in his visor and body shape, respectively. The name may have also been chosen as a contraction of "geiger counter," spelled in Japanese as ガイガーカウンター (gaigā kauntā).
Gigan is truly a strange monster, sporting a circular saw weapon located in his frontal abdominal region, large steel hooks for hands with smaller ones for toes, spikes running down his tail, three, large fin-like spines on his back and a red cybernetic visor for an eye. He also bears various avian characteristics, such as a 'crest' made of metal spines and a metal beak.
Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah
Originally, Gigan's skin was a darkish green color and possessed King Ghidorah-like golden scales that cover over several parts of his body, such as his body, neck, and tail. The fin-like spines on his back are also a golden color, but are smooth and not scaled.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Afterward, Gigan's appearance was changed to make him appear more cybernetic. His skin color is now a dark blue, his body is much thinner and more streamlined, the fin-like spines are now red, the buzzsaw in the abdomen is not as predominant or as noticeable as his original appearance and the beak appears to be a bit shorter than his previous form. There are also wire-like structures running across his body.
Gigan's roar is a sped-up, modified Ebirah screech; a brief, electronically styled chirp. In his original appearance, its roar is short, whereas the Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah incarnation is elongated slightly combined with a generic monster shriek as well as retaining the previous roars.
Sometimes considered Godzilla's most brutal and violent opponent, Gigan is shown to be vicious and sadistic in combat, preferring to shred his opponents up close with his hook hands and buzzsaw. Gigan is perhaps the most loyal of King Ghidorah's servants.
However, Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah, Gigan originally appears to be slight coward, retreating and leaving his leader at the mercy of their enemies as soon as the tide of battle turns against him. In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, while to being stronger, faster, and more ferocious than ever before, Gigan is shown to be somewhat incompetent, having his head easily blown off by King Caesar's lightning bolt and Baragon's Fire Beam.
Gigan is an ancient cybernetic monster that arrived on Earth thousands of years ago with Ghidorah. Originally defeated during his first visit, he returned 3 millennia later where he was defeated by Mothra and subsequently mummified. In the year 2012, Gigan's mummified corpse was discovered by the Earth Defense Force, and the monster was later awoken by MechaGodzilla.
Mothra II: Arriva of Ghidorah
In Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah, in ancient time 13,000 years ago, Gigan, along with King Ghidorah, arrived on Earth. Cutting wide swaths of broken bodies and rivers of innocent blood in their wake, the duo made their presence known. However, at some point, the Hydra and the Cyclopes placed their sights on Planet Earth and flew threw the reaches of space to get there.
Once they landed there, Ghidorah destroyed anything in its path whereas Gigan killed anything trying to oppose and stop them. Baragon and Caesar had awoken to stop them, but the odds turned against the Guardian Duo. The Shobijin summoned Mothra to aid them. Together, the three guardian monsters sent Gigan into a retreat into outer space while Ghidorah was defeated ad imprisoned.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, over 10,000 years ago, Gigan had returned to the Earth 3,000 years after Ghidorah had been imprisoned. The cybernetic Cyclopes had grown in power, becoming stronger, faster, and more ferocious than ever before. He returned to free his master and finish what they started, but Mothra intervened. Mothra fought Gigan in the far south arctic. Eventually, Mothra won by imprisoning Gigan in the ice and Gigan had remained there ever since.
Thousands of years later, Gigan was discovered as a mummified monster in Antarctica by EDF. According to the Shobijin, Gigan invaded the Earth thousands of years ago but was defeated by Mothra. They also informed EDF that Gigan arrived on Earth before that with his master King Ghidorah. Later on, Gigan was awakened by the mysterious monster MechaGodzilla. Together, they set out to find the imprisoned King Ghidorah and help the golden hydra conquer the Earth and wipe out all life.
Gigan and MechaGodzilla eventually found the meteor containing King Ghidorah. Landing near Mount Fuji, they also confronted Godzilla and Mothra. The four monsters charged at each other and battled back and forth. When Gigan was battling Mothra, she had seemingly defeated her. Gigan then attempted to help MechaGodzilla in his battle with Godzilla, both of which launched energy laser beams, missiles, and razor discs blades at Godzilla. As Godzilla was eventually brought down, Gigan and MechaGodzilla marched to the meteor to releasing King Ghidorah. However, the two fell through the ground.
They were then confronted and attacked by the First Guardian Monster Baragon, who had been awakened to stop King Ghidorah. Despite being smaller, Baragon managed to out compete the two with his speed and agility.
Powers and Abilities
Gigan is capable of flying at speeds of up to Mach 3 (2,301.81 mph) while in Earth's atmosphere. However, in the realm of space, Gigan is capable of flight at Mach 400 (306,908 mph) encasing himself in a diamond. This normally assists in interstellar travel and is utilized very little, if at all, during battle situations. When it is used in battle, however, Gigan will often use it to engage in aerial slams to continuously topple his opponents without giving them a chance to counter, or even get up. Another mode of movement that Gigan utilizes is his teleportation ability.
Gigan has a buzzsaw built into his abdominal area made of an unknown alien alloy; granting it considerable durability and sharpness. In his first appearance, Gigan's saw was able to draw blood from Baragon.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, it was even able to lacerate the hull of the Atragon. A favored tactic of Gigan is to use his powers of flight along with his buzzsaw in hit-and-run attacks, slashing his opponent as he races by them.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Gigan's was given a laser blast. Fired from Gigan's eye itself, it is a red-colored, large, powerful, and explosive energy blast that-in a manner similar to a cluster bomb-would split into smaller explosive bolts of energy upon entering close range of a target, saturating the target in multiple hits simultaneously. The eye beam has been officially titled the "Cluster Light Beam" and the beam can also scatter the instant it leaves Gigan's eye, having a limited range, and is referred to as "Shotgun Blast."
Gigan's forelimbs sport a pair of large metal hooks in place of hands which he can use these to batter and stab an opponent. In his original appearance, the tips of the hooks can release an explosive charge on contact with an enemy.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, instead of hooks, Gigan's forearms ended in scythe-like blades, the undersides of which were each equipped with dual grappling hooks which Gigan could use to bind an enemy and then drag them straight into his buzzsaw. He also retained his explosive charge on contact.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Gigan displayed the ability to fire guided razor discs from two hidden slots in his upper torso which were able to boomerang back for a second attempt if they initially missed their target.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Gigan was also able to use his scorpion-like tail to aid him in melee combat.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Gigan gains the ability to teleport. However, it is a short range-ability and he uses it to confuse opponents.
