"The year is 2004 AD. In order to try to counter the threat posed to the planet's survival by Godzilla, Japan's Counter G bureau recruited the most brilliant scientific brains in the world to build a fighting machine. The first machine was called Gotengo, but its fighting capabilities were limited. A far more powerful machine was required. A weapon to fight Godzilla. They called it Kiryu, otherwise known as...Mechagodzilla."
Kiryu (桐生 Kiryuu), also known as MechaGodzilla (メカゴジラ Mekagojira), is a mecha created by J.S.D.F (Japenese Self Defense Force) to protect humanity against giant monsters, specifically Godzilla. First appearing in Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla, Kiryu had lost its first fight against Godzilla. Several years later, in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Kiryu fought alongside Godzilla in order to defeating King Ghidorah. During the climax of the final battle, Kiryu was destroyed by King Ghidorah before the evil hydra was defeated once and for all by Godzilla.
Kiryu's nickname is derived from 機械竜, Kikai ryū, or (機龍, Ki ryū, which literally mean Machine dragon.
Despite being a machine, Kiryu bears a close resemblance to Godzilla himself. Kiryu is light silver in color, with various areas on its body exposing thick black wires underneath. The head has a long metal spike extending from the top of its forehead upward towards the back of its head.
The eyes are large and relatively close together. They are usually yellow in color but will turn red when Kiryu is using his full potential. A red scar extends underneath both eyes and it will often glow when Kiryu roars.
Its chest features three rounded plates that come together to cover the Absolute Zero Cannon housed underneath. When the suit is used to portray Super Weapons Kiryu, two blue rocket launchers are attached to its shoulders, while blue railguns are attached to its wrists.
Kiryu's roar is a more mechanical sound, which is also mixed with Godzilla's guttural roar.
Due to the continuing threat of Godzilla, Kiryu was created by the Japanese Self Defense Force made after studying Godzilla's skeletal structure and controlled by its military branch G-Force.
Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla
Although the Godzilla had disappeared, Japan still found itself under attack from other monsters over the decades. In the year 1992, the United Nations formed the Global Defense Force, a special branch dedicated to combating the threat posed by Godzilla and other monsters. When Godzilla and other monsters reappeared, this was the last straw. In 2002, the JSDF began construction of a machine built in Godzilla's own image. The machine, Kiryu or also known as MechaGodzilla, was finally completed in 2004.
The mech would first see action when Godzilla appeared in Tokyom who had risen out of Tokyo Bay. Kiryu was launched and engaged Godzilla. The two giants fought back and forth with neither being able to outmatch the other. At the climax of the battle, the mecha began carrying Godzilla out into the bay once more.
However, Godzilla's fellow Monster Island allies, including his son Minilla, had come to his aid. With them at his side, Godzilla had brought down Kiryu with his atomic beam. Kiryu was damaged and out of commision. However, rather than completely destroy the mecha, Godzilla had decided to spare its existence and all the monsters left the area back to the sea to Monster Island and Kiryu laid in the ruins of Tokyo, ready to be taken back for repairs.
Mothra: Godzilla Against Mothra
Three years later, in Mothra I: Godzilla Against Mothra, Kiryu had not been fully repaired from the damaged it sustained fighting Godzilla. When Godzilla reappeared, Mothra voluntarily engaged him. After the first Mothra was defeated, another Mothra challenged the Monster King to a draw. During both encounters, Kiryu never went into battle.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah
Five years later, in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Kiryu had been fully repaired and was ready to combat Godzilla should he ever return. However, the foretold return of King Ghidorah was near, and the Shobijin warned the government about it. Realizing that even the entire force of GDF, even with Kiryu, combined with the strength of the three guardians would not be enough to stop King Ghidorah, Japan shamed into receiving aid not only from the guardians, but from Godzilla and his fellow monsters as well.
During the battle at Mount Fuji, Kiryu was about to be sent. However, this was halted when Godzilla unleashed a powerful nuclear blast. Though only the alien MechaGodzilla had been destroyed, Godzilla and King Ghidorah as well as their allies had survived and Mothra was wounded saving her newly-hatched Mothra larva. During the final climax of the battle against King Ghidorah, when both Godzilla and the new Mothra were down, all of Earth's monsters rallied against King Ghidorah. Kiryu flew into battle again.
Teaming up with the Earth's monsters, Kiryu was able to use his drill in his right arm to injure King Ghidorah. However, even that was not enough to stop the power of the evil hydra. After King Ghidorah's gravity beams had struck the Mecha, Kiryu was brought down and destroyed beyond repairs.
Absolute Zeo Cannon
Kiryu's most devastating weapon is the Absolute Zero Cannon, (a weapon also utilized by the Atragon.) Stored in its chest behind a trio of folding panels, the Absolute Zero Cannon fires a powerful ball of energy that flash-freezes its target to 273 degrees below Absolute Zero, thereby causing it to disintegrate under the weight of its own mass at the molecular level. The weapon is powered by an enormous synthetic diamond.
Electric wrist blade
For close combat, a short blade can be extended from Kiryu's right wrist which was not only able to penetrate Godzilla's nearly impervious hide, but was also able to discharge a crippling electrical surge into his opponent's body.
Kiryu was also able to fly; although its limited energy reserves required the machine to be airlifted to the battlefield by two White Herons. Kiryu is also incapable of unassisted takeoff but was shown able to bound high enough into the air to clear several city blocks.
Kiryu is able to unleash two, powerful, lightning-like energy blasts from its mouth.
Kiryu is a well-balanced machine and agile, moving with a fluid, almost organic grace. Its armament includes oral maser cannons, dual laser cannons on each arm, and a flight pack that contains two forward-firing rocket launchers and four batteries along its back and sides for launching guided missiles. Upon emptying its payload, the flight pack can detach from Kiryu's body and launched to push the enemy a safe distance back before being remotely detonated. The flight pack also has weapons pods where rockets are fired; leaving the attached thrusters on Kiryu's body to maintain its aerial capabilities.
Kiryu is able to morph its right hand to collapse into a revolving drill. It did so by rapidly spinning until every finger merged together. It has shown to be very effective against Godzilla, causing extreme pain and piercing his skin with ease, though only for a short while.
Kiryu's tail was able to move which allowed Kiryu to use it as an effective weapon, being able to knock Godzilla down with sheer force.
Triple Hyper Maser Cannon
In addition to the Absolute Zero Cannon, Kiryu was also given a Triple Hyper Maser Cannon in its chest region, which is a powerful lightning-like blast. The Triple Hyper Maser Cannon could be fired simultaneously with Kiryu's mouth cannon, which would cause most monsters agonizing pain.
