- "A Guardian of the Earth named Mothra, Queen of the Monsters."
Mothra (モスラ Mosura), often nicknamed The Original Mothra, is a giant divine moth kaiju. The undisputed Queen of the Monsters, this Mothra first appeared in Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah, where she engaged in a battle thousands of years ago against the destructive hydra King Ghidorah. Aided by fellow guardian monsters Baragon and King Caesar, she managed to defeat the three-headed demon and imprisoned him for many millennia.
The name "Mothra" is the suffixation of "-ra" (a common last syllable in kaiju names) to "moth." Since the Japanese language does not have dental fricatives, it is approximated "Mosura" in Japanese. Originally, Mothra's name was approximated in English as "Mosla," but it was later corrected to "Mothra".
Mothra is essentially a gigantic moth-like creature with brightly-colored wings. Her body is mostly orange in color, with several white spots, most notably on the top of her head. Her fur is a brighter color, with most of the brown areas now colored orange.
The eyes are a bright blue color. The antennae are long and thick and feature a tuft of fur at their tips, giving them a closer appearance to real moth antennae. The legs are long, thick, and appear birdlike, with visible white claws on the feet.
The wings possess a new pattern as well as fold and flap more realistically, giving Mothra a more lifelike appearance. Her face is wider, while the eyes sit further on the sides of the head.
Mothra's chirps are actually Anguirus's roars sped up.
Despite having wrought destruction worthy of any Toho kaiju, Mothra is portrayed as a kind and benevolent creature, causing destruction only when acting as protector to her worshipers on Infant Island or her egg, or as collateral damage, while protecting Earth from a greater threat. Mothra is usually accompanied by two tiny priestesses or fairies (often called Shobijin—Japanese for "small beauties") who also speak for her.
Mothra is a benevolent and ancient creature that possesses some level of divinity. Having been protecting the world since the beginning of time itself, Mothra is the guardian goddess of the remote Infant Island in the south Pacific Ocean. There, she is perpetually reborn through an egg and is worshiped by the island's natives. She is spoken for by two miniature telepathic fairies, called the Shobijin.
Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah
In Mothra II: Arrival of Ghidorah, during ancient times when the two alien monsters King Ghidorah and Gigan appeared on Earth and nearly defeated the two guardian monsters Baragon and King Caesar, the Shobijin summoned Mothra to aid them. Mothra flew to Mount Fuji to do battle with Ghidorah and arrived in a flurry of laser and energy beams.
The demonic dragon and alien cyclopes together could not stand against the power of Mothra and were eventually defeated. With the help of Baragon and King Caesar, Mothra sent Gigan into a retreat and imprisoned the Ghidorah in a giant meteor. Mothra then flew the meteor into the atmosphere. Letting it go, Mothra bid farewell to her fellow guardians and returns to Infant Island.
Her duty done and in order to preserve the legacy of her species, Mothra summoned an enormous egg. And there at Infant Island, Mothra lived out the last of her days on a sacred rock.
Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah: Rise of Armageddon
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah: Rise of Armageddon, though not seen in modern times, the Mothra that battled King Ghidorah thousands of years ago appears in flashbacks as the Shobijin explain the battle and the prophecy.
- Ultra-Sonic Beam Pulsers: Mothra is able to fire twin, red-colored beams of energy, called Ultra-Sonic Beam Pulsers, from her antennae. These beams are remarkably accurate and capable of causing large explosions as well as pierce through structures, such as large rocks and mountains.
- Wing Lightning: Mothra can unleash arcs of red, fairly powerful lightning from her wings, which will strike enemies and cause explosions.
- Energy Pulse: In addition to the wing lightning, Mothra can keep the energy in her body to release to another via touch. She can also emit a high voltage current from her claws that causes explosions upon touching an opponent.
- Flash Dash: Mothra can perform an enhanced melee attack by charging herself with energy and temporarily increase her flight speed to Mach 80. Once striking an opponent, it will cause explosions and conduct lightning-like energy.
Mothra is capable of flying at speeds of Mach 5 (3,836.35 mph).
In addition to flying across the sky at great speeds, Mothra's wings can (and generally do) create gales that tear apart forests and rock structures and send other kaiju flying. Her great bulk of a body is commonly used to her advantage in battle to slam into opponents (both in larva and adult form), and her surprising levels of strength can help her to drag and even lift monsters like Ghidorah.
Mothra is able to shoot poison darts from her abdomen.
Mothra is able to emit "scales," a yellow poisonous powder that can usually asphyxiate an enemy. Additionally, her powder also has a different effect, and acts as a cloud of mirror-like scales, which would allow beam weapons to repeatedly rebound before striking the target, effectively making them impossible to miss.
Baragon and King Caesar easily took advantage of this condition to attack King Ghidorah by repeatedly firing their energy-based attacks, allowing them to strike King Ghidorah over and over again, with the rebound effect negating any chance of their energy attacks not hitting their target. Additionally, Mothra is also able to use her scales multiple times without any loss of her ability to fly.
Mothra's powder was able to redirect both energy beams and physical projectiles back to their original senders not only by reflecting them, but she can also use them to attack via her kamikaze attack with which she strikes Gigan and survived.
Mothra is one of the most powerful psychics in the Toho universe. She uses this power benevolently, to communicate with humans and monsters alike, or defensively, to destroy her enemies. As suggested earlier, Mothra is assumed to be divine and draws many parallels to the Phoenix, which makes her one of the more powerful kaiju of the Godzilla Sagaverse.
- Although not the very first Mothra that ever existed, this Mothra is referred to as "the Original Mothra" due to the fact that she was the first one to fight King Ghidorah thousands of years ago.
- This Mothra was one of only three featured in shortfilms that did not have a larva form to start with.
