The Japanese name of Rodan, "Radon," is a contraction of "pteranodon" and may also have been chosen to suggest radiation. The spelling of Radon in Japanese also corresponds to the name of Ladon, the dragon-like monster represented in Greek Mythology.
Rodan resembles a large pterosaur that walks upright on two legs. Rodan has a red-brown skin with a yellow-colored spiky chest and two on the back of his head. His eyes were colored green.
Rodan has fingers at the end of the arms, with the first digit being smaller rather than being equally the same length as the other finger digits. On its chest the plates are larger and more obvious. The horns on this suit are much less jagged but slant upwards.
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, upon being bestowed with nuclear energy, Rodan not only grew larger but also changed into a much brighter, almost blood-red color; his chest spikes and claws were colored yellow.
Originally, Rodan is depicted as a horrific and dangerous creature. However, Rodan is an intelligent and ferocious fighter in combat, shown by his use of aerial maneuvers when fighting King Ghidorah and by him snapping his jaws in an attempt to crush King Ghidorah's head. However, Rodan also appears to be overly aggressive to a point that overrides pragmatism; shown by how he opted to clash with Ghidorah upon flying into the latter, despite his opponent's superior size, ferocity, and abilities.
Despite his aforementioned aggression, Rodan only attacked following Godzilla entering his territory. Beforehand, upon noticing the large human settlement that had developed nearby during his dormancy, he was content to curiously observe without becoming hostile. Rodan's decimation of the nearby town with a sonic boom when he took flight indicates he is either indifferent towards humans at large, or that he'd deemed all humans his enemy in response to the Raptors' attack on him.
In later films, especially upon seeing Godzilla bravely protecting Minilla from Destoroyah by himself, Rodan (along with Anguirus) joins with Godzilla to battle the crustacean. Rodan is seen as a loyal ally of Godzilla who assists him and the other Earth monsters in fighting off King Ghidorah. Additionally, Rodan sees Godzilla as a friend and will go to great lengths to protect him, nearly being killed by both King Ghidorah and SpaceGodzilla.
Rodan is a member of a prehistoric supersonic species of Pteranodon who have existed for over millions of years, lived deep underground on Adonoa Island and mutated from exposure to radiation as well as due to nuclear dumping on the island by the Russians and grew to gigantic size as a result.
The Return of Godzilla
In The Return of Godzilla, Rodan thrived on an Island known as Adonoa in the Bering Sea. One night when the giant pterosaur went to a cliff to pick out a fish for food, he notices that the sea is beginning to glow blue and, several seconds later, Godzilla rises and lumbers ashore.
Rodan violently attacks the King of the Monsters, pecking at him and razing him with his sharp talons and spiked chest and the two ancient beasts continue to fight. Rodan, however, is eventually defeated by Godzilla but before the Monster King could kill the pterosaurs, he spares the flier's life. Godzilla is then attacked by Anguirus and the two fall into the water after a brutal fight. Rodan watches as he lays on the ground. The fight over, Rodan takes flight.
The Son of Godzilla
In The Son of Godzilla, Rodan returned and reappeared over the course of the Godzilla Sagaverse. This time, the pterosaur had teamed up with Anguirus in an attempt to take on Godzilla together.

Powers & Abilities
Rodan possesses an internal volcanic combustion system; causing him to radiate heat, the temperature of which can reach up to 1200°C. As a result, Rodan's external body temperature is life-threateningly hot upon close contact, to the point that he was able to use it during his skirmish with Mothra to slowly burn the latter to near-death.
Cyclonic Drift Streams
Rodan's massive wings are powerful enough to create a devastating sonic thunderclap beneath his flight, powerful enough to instantly decimate buildings and throw vehicles, debris, and people straight to the air with tornado-like force.
He also uses his beak and talons effectively in battle (as shown in Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2, where his beak was powerful enough to crush boulders), and his wings, despite their delicate appearance, are quite durable. Rodan can lift creatures several times his weight, for instance, Godzilla. Rodan also usually has spikes on his head and chest, which he may use in battle.
Due to his armor and size, Rodan can completely shrug off bullets from rifles, and he's unfazed by close contact with volcanic lava. Rodan was one of the few monsters not affected by Godzilla's atomic breath. In The Return of Godzilla, Godzilla uses his breath against Rodan a couple of times but Rodan seemed at first unaffected by it at all.
He can even survive baring the full force of King Ghidorah's gravity beams (though he was still knocked down). Rodan also shrugged off a few of King Ghidorah's gravity beams in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. He was struck several times on his wings but showed no pain or reaction. Despite his high body temperature and affinity for heat, he even recovered seemingly on his own from falling inert into the ocean. Even an open wound from being impaled through the shoulder by Mothra's stinger was something Rodan seemed to be able to shrug off once he'd recovered.
Flight Speed & Agility
Having a skeletal structure similar to that of a pteranodon and thus capable of fast, long-distance flight at speeds of Mach 1.5 and eventually Mach 3, Rodan's most noticeable trait is his flying speed, which has allowed him to effortlessly outmaneuver and outrun supersonic jets. Aside from his impressive speed and agility, Rodan possesses a variety of special abilities. He is capable of creating destructive shockwaves when flying, which he has used to demolish major cities such as Tokyo and Moscow. In addition, Rodan can cause powerful winds while on the ground by simply flapping his wings. When Rodan became Fire Rodan, he was able to fly faster at Mach 4.5
Rodan is fast enough to keep up with and outfly military fighter jets and the USS Argo, intercept King Ghidorah in the sky, and even avoid Godzilla's atomic breath, although he still managed to get defeated by him with a tail whip after approaching Godzilla. He is capable of acrobatic aerial maneuvers which made him a devastating foe who swiftly decimated and eradicated the aforementioned Raptor squad. With the wingspan of over 650 ft, he has the capability of flying across oceans without tiring.
Rodan has a razor-sharp beak that can be used as a formidable weapon and can be used to inflict cutting, impaling, or crushing damage.
Rodan has razor-sharp talons which are sufficient to rend and cut most materials.
Strength & Combat
He also uses his beak and talons effectively in battle (as shown in where his beak was powerful enough to crush boulders), and his wings, despite their delicate appearance, are quite durable. Rodan can lift creatures several times his weight, for instance, Godzilla. Rodan also usually has spikes on his head and chest, which he may use in battle.
Uranium Heat Beam
In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, Rodan develops the ability to emit a purple-colored radioactive heat beam from his mouth called the uranium heat beam, upon being endowed with nuclear energy as well as exposure to Godzilla and radioactive waste on Adonoa Island. Similar to Godzilla's atomic breath in many ways, this uranium heat beam is relatively powerful, capable of creating a series of large explosions upon contact.
Rodan has displayed the ability to emit energy shockwaves from his wings simply by flapping them.
